IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME IS A PAIN IN THE BUTT
You know that. I know that.
But just because there’s no cure for IBS, that doesn’t mean your life needs to stay stuck where it’s at right now. There actually is a way to change things so your IBS can be pulled back into line… so you can get back to living your life without your dodgy digestive system being in control.
And that’s what I’m here to help you with.
I’m Glenda Bishop.
Neuroscientist. Wellness Coach. Educator.
Fellow IBS fighter for 25 years and counting.
I know what it’s like to have IBS.
But I also know that IBS doesn’t have to stop you in your tracks.
LIVING WITH IBS CAN BE SERIOUSLY CHALLENGING
This is how it’s been for me…
since diagnosis with IBS
of food intolerances
of low FODMAP living
of giving up
It hasn’t been easy, but I’ve finally found relief & my IBS is under control
In the last 10 years, our understanding of IBS has changed a lot. Finally, the doctors have stopped saying that it’s all in your head (well, most have) and know there are solutions for getting IBS under control. With the advance of the low FODMAP diet, plus research into the effects of stress, exercise and healthy living on the gut, we know more than ever about managing IBS. Admittedly there’s no quick fix, but it certainly can be done.
And that’s why I’m here… to help you get your IBS under control.
But you don’t just want some random person with IBS helping you. Let’s face it, IBS is a medical condition and it needs to be treated with caution. So it’s a good thing I’m not just some random person.
HERE’S THE EXPERTISE I’LL BE USING TO HELP YOU SORT OUT YOUR IBS
Since IBS can be triggered by so many different things, you can’t get it under control by only focussing on nutrition, the mind-gut connection, healthy living, physical activity or the food you eat each day. You have to work on all of those things at once.
So it’s a good thing I’ve got all those bases covered. Only a holistic approach can give you the personalised solution that you need.
MORE ABOUT MY QUALIFICATIONS
If formal qualifications matter to you, here’s my collection:
- Registered Nutritionist (certified by the Nutrition Society of Australia)
- Master of Human Nutrition (Deakin University)
- PhD in Neuroscience (Monash University)
- Bachelor of Science (Honours), majoring in biomedical science – physiology, anatomy, biochemistry (University of Queensland)
- Wellness Coaching, Level 2 (Wellness Coaching Australia)
- Certificates III and IV in Fitness (Australian Institute of Fitness)
- Graduate Certificate of Higher Education, which means I’m a qualified university lecturer (Monash University)
But even though I’ve got all those qualifications, I’m still just an ordinary person. I’m not going to talk at you and dismiss what you’re going through. Remember that I have IBS too and I’ve been dealing with those kinds of health professionals for years – there’s no way I’d do that to you.
A FEW THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ME
If you stick around for a while, you’ll soon learn that I’m a very down-to-earth person with a no-fuss attitude. I like my life to be simple and stress-free – actually my sensitive belly likes it that way – so I’m always finding cheats to make things easier. That way I’ve got more time to do the things I truly enjoy…
* Going for long walks to stretch my legs, clear my head and enjoy the natural beauty of the world.
* Pottering around the kitchen and finding more ways to enjoy the foods that I can still eat.
* Playing games with my nephews, building Lego, kicking a ball or tickling them just so I can hear them laugh.
* Curling up on the couch with a good book or the latest TV show with superheroes or doctors who like to run (bonus points if you get that!).
* Sitting outside basking in the warm sun with a cup of tea, a low FODMAP snack and my favourite podcasts (like The Low FODMAP Diet & IBS podcast).
* Catching up with friends in cafés and living my life to the full to remind my IBS and sensitive tummy that I’m the one in control.
“I feel really at ease with Glenda because she has the knowledge to know why things were happening and what was causing it. I don’t think you can do the low FODMAP diet successfully by yourself. It’s very important to work with a qualified nutritionist who understands it. And working with Glenda has been the key for my getting better.
I didn’t get better overnight, but slowly everything started to settle and each step has made me feel that much better. It’s been really encouraging and enlightening because I didn’t realise I suffered so much until it was gone. Working with Glenda is one of the best choices I’ve ever made. It’s been so helpful and so life changing for me.”
ELIZABETH TIMMS, QUEENSLAND
“Glenda’s got a very, very thorough knowledge of the low FODMAP diet and I think it’s because she follows the diet herself and knows the potential triggers because she’s been down this path and that path. I think learning from someone who’s actually living it is excellent.
You can learn the details, but until you’ve done it yourself you don’t really understand it. And it’s too big a topic to try to wade through the Monash University stuff by yourself. Just understanding bits and pieces of it would give you an incomplete knowledge and it could be quite dangerous.”
RACHEL EAGLETON, RACHEL EAGLETON NUTRITIONIST
“Glenda provides really practical advice on how to approach not just the low FODMAP diet, but how to live best with your digestive issues. This makes A Less Irritable Life not just a recipe or low FODMAP diet resource, but a “go to” place for your overall wellbeing. From stress management tips to the importance exercise and other helpful techniques to manage and survive situations where you have little or no control – this site is an all rounder.
I think that when people are giving advice on the low FODMAP diet and IBS, it always comes best from a place where it’s personal… you live it, you breath it. So I like that A Less Irritable Life is from Glenda’s own point of view, as well as from her professional standpoint, with her education and training.”
MARTINE BANKS, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
“When people understand that Glenda has not only been there, but she has a way to help because she has so much practical knowledge as well, and she’s done so much research… it’s just comfortable. People can relate to Glenda and feel comfortable with her.
Glenda has a very broad and in-depth knowledge of IBS and the low FODMAP diet because she has researched, studied and got qualifications in these topics. And she has it personally and has gone through what people with IBS go through – probably even more because she’s been going through it for longer – so she can understand and empathise. She’s the perfect person that can help and direct others that are suffering from IBS and on the low FODMAP diet.”
